With B. myriadea the apothecia surface (called the epihymenium) is dark brown and contains solid crystals that shine when viewed in polarized light. Below that layer the hymenium stains blue when potassium hydroxide is introduced followed by an iodine preparation. Again, the red cells below everything are bark cells from the tree on which the lichen was found.
