Chaenothecopsis rappii

Spore Ascus

Thin Section

Thallus

Lichen Index

At first glance this genus would seem to be identical to Calicium. But with  Chaenothecopsis the asci tend not to dissolve within the peridium and most are still in tact when the covering splits. Instead of a massive spore presentation for immediate wind dispersal, as with Calicium, spores of this genus are only available for dispersal by wind as the individual asci surrender them. To date, we have only found this species on cabbage palm trunks, sometimes in massive colonies.
