The large amount of black material represents the exciple that has been heavily carbonized. The exciple in many species encases the ascomata (sexual reproducing vehicle of lichens), separating it from the rest of the thallus. The degree of carbonization of the exciple, or the lack of it entirely, are important characters in the graphids for the determination of genus and species. |
