Haemmatoma persoonii

Bright red apothecia on a white thallus are usually enough to identify this common lichen. It is often found in the driest and harshest of conditions in full sun. The red discs of the apothecia give off a red cloud when a 10% solution of potassium hydroxide is introduced under a cover slip to a thin section.
