A yellow tinted thallus is common in T. floridanum. The black ostiole openings are surrounded by a pale ring but not always as white as shown. In addition, the perethecia (ostiole and associated cavity below it) are frequently grouped. When in this condition it is a close visual match for T. variolosum. However,  spores of the latter are considerably smaller than those of T. floridanum.
